A significant change is on the cards for South African golf courses as one of the largest suppliers of golf carts pivots toward a dynamic new brand of lithium-powered carts that have already taken the rest of the world by storm.

Smith Power Equipment has ceased its partnership with its previous cart supplier and explored other options to meet the changing needs of South African buyers. Its new TARA brand offers golfers world-leading features in a package that is approximately 30% less expensive than traditional brands, with a class-leading warranty to boot.

According to Mark Chittenden, Smith Power Equipment’s general manager, the company is eager to introduce the advanced lineup to South African golf courses.

Smith Power’s recent decision to represent TARA marks a significant realignment in the golf cart market, which was prompted largely by the practical need to balance affordability with technological innovation and assist golf clubs to improve profitability.

“Until now, golf courses have been limited to two options when seeking a rental fleet solution: either a new costly cart from one of the traditional carts companies, or alternatively refurbishing their existing fleet, which ultimately could be cheaper, but has a limited lifespan and inferior feel.

Now, with the introduction of TARA, the courses have a third solution enabling courses the opportunity to buy new carts at a significantly more affordable price than that of the traditional brands. This gives the golf course the opportunity to reinvigorate its fleets and give golfers the most modern golfing experience,” explains Chittenden.

“When financed, the lower acquisition price equates to a monthly repayment savings of around R1 100 per month per cart less than other competitive brands. Golf courses will thus reach breakeven point on cart rentals at three rounds less, improving return on investment significantly.”

More about the carts

The manufacturer of these carts already commands a 30% market share in the United States and is similarly growing its share in other golf-loving countries across the globe. Over the last 18 years, it has set up four manufacturing facilities worldwide, with an output of over 15 000 golf carts per month.

In South Africa, Smith Power Equipment’s fleet offering includes two distinct models in the TARA Spirit Pro and TARA Spirit Plus. Both models focus on elevating players’ golf course experience with the addition of premium materials and solid build construction that includes a full aluminium chassis. Both models are powered by 48V lithium-ion batteries with unique features for faster charging, longer lifespans and minimal maintenance throughout the lifespan of the cart.
