Omnia Holdings Limited (Omnia) – an international, diversified group that supplies speciality chemicals and services, technology and integrated solutions for the agriculture, mining, and chemical application industries – has been recognised by CFI.co (Capital Finance International) for its commitment to developing and implementing sustainable practices. Each year, CFI.co identifies individuals and organisations that contribute significantly to economies and add value for all stakeholders. Omnia has been awarded the CFI.co Award for Best Sustainable Diversified Chemicals Group Africa 2022.

Omnia’s commitment to achieving zero harm, making a positive impact, and creating a better world, is reflected in its decision to incorporate the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its core strategic frameworks. The award highlights Omnia’s performance in sustainable practices, empowerment initiatives, and technology and innovation. Notable initiatives relate to carbon credits, renewable energy projects, oil recycling and water efficiency. Omnia’s progress in these areas is recognised as an indicator of the business’s commitment to shared value.

Seelan Gobalsamy, CEO of Omnia commented:“Omnia is proud to receive this award, in recognition of our commitment to expert execution of sustainable practices and initiatives throughout our value chain. Our approach to sustainability is deeply embedded across a growing number of facets within our business and aims to not only enhance our own impact but that of our customers too. We are consciously and progressively investing in technology, time and resources to ensure due respect and care for our natural environments. People are at the heart of everything we do and the upskilling and empowerment of individuals, both within and outside of our business, is a core pillar of our corporate stewardship.”

From a social impact perspective, Omnia’s corporate social investment (CSI)[ST1]  supported a variety of local and community focused initiatives. The company’s focus on education and meaningful youth empowerment is evident in learnerships for people with disabilities, internship programmes for engineering graduates and a partnership with Primestars’ eduCate Matric Math & Science Revision Programme and their Step Up 2 a Green Start-Up National Youth Entrepreneurship Programme.

On the environmental front, Omnia’s commitment to minimising harm and increasing its positive impact has yielded commendable results with further investments being made towards achieving the group’s 2030 targets. Omnia has embarked on utility reduction projects to increase its efficiency in the use of steam, water and electricity. This includes an investment in a 5MW solar farm project, for which 6 hectares of land has been allocated. This will supplement the group’s self-generated power capacity at its Sasolburg plant.

To date, efforts made to optimise cooling tower cycles at the Sasolburg plant have yielded a 44% decrease in water discharged. Coupled with the 51 megalitres of recycled and reused water that Omnia has generated serves as evidence of the business’s focus to protect natural resources.

The success of Omnia’s commercial turnaround, strategic business focus, prudent cash management and operational efficiencies have been vital enablers for the sustainability milestones that we have been able to achieve thus far, and those that we continue to strive towards as we grow the business. I wish to thank every member of the Omnia family for their role in bolstering and accelerating our sustainability journey,” concluded Gobalsamy.
