TMACC honours foster mothers this Women’s Month

3 min read

This Women’s Month, Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) chose to shine a light on some of South Africa’s quietest yet most powerful heroines: foster mothers.

Following Mandela Day, when TMACC hosted foster children from Home from Home, joined by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, to experience the wonder of Table Mountain, the idea to do something equally special for the foster mothers was born. August then became a time to honour the women who make those children’s futures possible. These foster mothers open their homes and hearts to young people who might otherwise face life on the streets, offering them safety, love and the chance of a brighter tomorrow.

Too often, their extraordinary acts of kindness go unrecognised. Yet in their daily lives, they share their last piece of bread, nurture children through trauma, and instil values that ripple through generations. The children they raise will go on to finish school, find work, and contribute to society while always carrying with them the gift of a home filled with love.

“For us at Table Mountain, celebrating Women’s Month meant celebrating the real women of South Africa,” said Wahida Parker, managing director at TMACC. “Not celebrities or public figures, but women whose compassion and resilience form the true backbone of our families and our communities. We are not only honoured, but deeply humbled to be in the presence of such remarkable women.”

The mothers were treated to a day designed to make them feel ‘extra special’, with scenic experiences, moments of reflection on the mountain, immersive virtual reality tours, and shared laughter over refreshments. More than anything, TMACC wanted each woman to leave knowing she is seen, valued, and celebrated.

“We see you. We see the difference you make. We see the children you uplift and the futures you create,” added Parker. “Today, and always, we honour you.”

Throughout the month of August foster mothers from various organisations were treated to a day out at Table Mountain.

Through initiatives like these, TMACC continues to use its platform to celebrate unsung heroines and nurture the spirit of Ubuntu that lies at the heart of South Africa.
