Psira celebrates 23 years of industry transformation

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) marks 23 years of regulating, professionalizing, and modernizing the private security sector. Established in 2002 under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act (Act No. 56 of 2001), PSiRA has driven industry advancement through digital transformation, compliance enforcement, capacity-building, and empowerment initiatives.
To enhance operational efficiency, PSiRA actively collaborates with industry stakeholders through workshops, business briefings, seminars, training programs, empowerment sessions, and community outreach efforts.
As a member of the International Association of Security and Investigative Regulators (IASIR), PSiRA also maintains cooperative agreements with Zimbabwe and China.
National Expansion
PSiRA has grown its presence to 10 branches across seven provinces, with plans to expand to the Northern Cape and Northwest.
Digital Transformation
The launch of e-PSiRA and a mobile app has improved service accessibility, enabling online registration, certificate renewal, and remote access to essential services.
Industry Growth & Compliance
The introduction of specialized enforcement units, including Firearms Compliance and Special Operations, has strengthened industry oversight.
To further strengthen compliance and meet industry demands, the Authority continues to advocate for legislative amendments. The Authority has also published over forty research reports that shaped the industry.
Industry Training & Capacity Building
PSiRA prioritizes high training standards. The organisation has revised training materials to align with industry regulations and introduced Human Rights elements into training specifically for Grade E.
Empowerment programmes
PSiRA is committed to uplifting the communities it serves through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives designed to empower both the private security industry and disadvantaged groups. These programs focus on supporting vulnerable individuals and promoting community development.
Through its Human Capital Division, PSiRA provides annual bursaries for security service providers and their children, enabling qualifying applicants to further their education.
In the last financial year, PSiRA also introduced an SMME program aimed at empowering small businesses by offering guidance on navigating the industry and accessing available opportunities within the organization.
As PSiRA continues its modernization efforts, it remains committed to strengthening and professionalizing the private security sector for years to come.
