Gone are the days of double-cab bakkies being mere workhorses with a few extra seats. These automotive stalwarts now boast several safety innovations and technologies that are on par with those found in SUVs. 

“Many have raised concerns about the stability of bakkies, particularly given their elevated ride heights and increased centres of gravity,” says Du Plessis. “The Landtrek confronts this challenge head-on with its cutting-edge Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). This innovative system is crafted to enhance stability by swiftly identifying and mitigating instances of traction loss, reassuring drivers of a more secure driving experience.” 

To this end, the system comprises three key functions, including reinforced traction in the form of a Traction Control System; Trailer-Sway Control, which engages the ESP as soon as it detects the swaying of a trailer when towing; and Hill Descent Control.

The HDC is a must-have addition for those looking to tackle the great outdoors. It aids in the controlled descent of steep slopes, greatly improving manoeuvrability. This feature allows for precise, low-speed control over the vehicle’s path, providing drivers with the ease and confidence to conquer even the toughest of terrains. 

“Besides its six airbags, 360° 3D camera and rear-view camera, the Landtrek also features a tyre deflation detection system that continuously informs the driver of events of pressure loss in one or more tyres directly on its 10” touchscreen,” explains Du Plessis. “This is particularly beneficial for those looking to go off-road, and helps drivers maintain optimum tyre pressure for the perfect blend of traction and fuel consumption.”

In its bid to prevent accidents, bolster driver awareness and enhance road safety, the Landtrek is also equipped with an Involuntary Line Crossing Alert system. By utilising a camera and sensors, the system is designed to detect the inadvertent crossing of longitudinal road surface markings. Should the system identify a situation it perceives as a decline in the driver’s attention or the vehicle’s speed surpasses 65km/h, it triggers both a visual and audible alert to notify the driver.
