Bold new initiative to tackle South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis

2 min read

South Africa’s youth unemployment rate remains among the highest in the world, with 43.7% of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET). Black African women are most affected, facing limited digital access and systemic barriers to economic participation.

The Womandla Foundation is responding with a bold solution that will equip 13 000 young people – 60% of them women. The initiative will provide free training and virtual mentoring, focusing on crucial areas like education, youth empowerment, climate change and entrepreneurship, with the goal of preparing youth for the future of work.

The project aims to connect at least 25% of participants to sustainable livelihoods within its first year.

“This is about unlocking a generation’s potential,” says Sam Gqomo, Womandla Foundation CEO and founder. “Training alone isn’t enough; young people need real, accessible pathways to economic opportunity.”

Womandla Foundation’s ongoing entrepreneurship and development initiatives focus on:

  • Digital empowerment – equipping youth with globally recognised digital credentials.

  • Mentorship and business support – connecting participants to industry leaders.

  • Job readiness and market access – providing direct pathways to employment and entrepreneurship.

By combining education, entrepreneurship and empowerment, Womandla aims to create systemic change and close the opportunity gap for women and youth.

The initiative will officially launch at the Womandla Exhibition & Fundraising Gala, a full day of business masterclasses, entertainment and purpose-driven networking.

Highlights include:

  • Launch of the empowerment project, Womandla Business Listing & Online Marketplace.

  • Showcasing inspiring women-led businesses supported by the foundation.

  • Fundraising for future development initiatives.

  • Live entertainment and networking with industry leaders.

Attendees can expect speeches on work, wealth and wellness from the likes of Lincoln Mali, CEO of Lesaka Technologies; Anele Maphanga, PR lead at Unilever; and Dr Taz Emeran-Thomas.
