SunCentral solar farm continues to uplift communities

4 min read

As part of the SunCentral solar farm’s ongoing commitment to support local communities, SolarAfrica, as project owner, has partnered with the main transmission substation principal contractor Proconics NewFields on a comprehensive corporate social investment initiative in the Emthanjeni and Hanover areas.

This initiative focuses on improving access to healthcare, enhancing educational environments, empowering local businesses and promoting inclusion for vulnerable groups.

Aiding mobility for local clinic patients

Around 30 wheelchairs were donated to clinics in both Hanover and De Aar to improve mobility, independence and dignity for people living with disabilities. Many community members cannot afford assistive devices, and clinics often face shortages. By supplying wheelchairs, the companies aims to support better access to healthcare, ease the burden on caregivers and healthcare staff, and promote greater community participation for individuals with mobility challenges.

Emthanjeni Primary’s new reading room

Learners at Emthanjeni Primary School can now enjoy a dedicated reading facility that supports literacy and academic growth. The reading classroom is designed to enhance literacy development and create a nurturing space where learners can build strong reading skills. This initiative supports improved academic performance, encourages a love for learning and strengthens the school’s ability to deliver quality education.

A safe space to play for Hanover Primary

Safe play spaces contribute to improved wellbeing, stimulate creativity and create a more engaging and supportive learning environment at school. Outdoor play equipment (main image) was donated to promote physical activity, healthy development and positive social interaction among learners. Learners at Hanover Primary School can now benefit from a safe and stimulating outdoor play that supports physical, social and emotional development.

Enhanced skills for SMMEs

Earlier this year, the teams kicked off a workshop series to empower local small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with practical skills and knowledge to participate in construction-related economic activity.

This three-month workshop offered a range of benefits including strengthening enterprises to support sustainable job creation and equipping them to comply with standards applicable to large-scale infrastructure projects. This all will assist in establishing a legacy of capable, compliant and formally registered local businesses.

“At Proconics NewFields, we believe every project is an opportunity to uplift the communities we serve,” says Takalani Mamburu, Transmission & Distribution project manager. “Through our partnership with SolarAfrica, we’ve helped strengthen local clinics, empower young learners and equip SMMEs with the tools needed for long-term participation in the local economy. This is the kind of legacy we are proud to build alongside our partners.”

Comments Pamela Matyeka, community and economic specialist at SolarAfrica, “The entire SunCentral team is proud to partner with Proconics to support the broader local community. We’re happy to offer support for strengthened healthcare services, improved educational resources, enhanced local business networks and elevated support for vulnerable groups.”
