Gordon Carbon Solutions: Leading South Africa’s green transition with ESG at the core
4 min read
Since 2013, Gordon Carbon Solutions (GCS) has established itself as a pioneering force in South Africa’s sustainability and energy management landscape. A proudly black- and female-led Level 1 B-BBEE business, GCS was founded on the belief that environmental responsibility, social inclusion, and strong governance are not just business imperatives but the foundation of long-term transformation.
Prakshna Velter is a visionary entrepreneur and sustainability leader with over a decade of experience in energy management, carbon planning, and sustainable investments. As the Managing Director of Gordon Carbon Solutions (GCS), she has positioned the company at the forefront of South Africa’s green transition, delivering practical, high-impact solutions that integrate environmental action, social empowerment, and strong governance (ESG).
She holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) specializing in Managerial Finance, International Financial Management, and Management Science.
In addition, she is certified in ISO/SANS 50001 Lead Auditor Training, is a trained Climate Reality Leader under former US Vice President Al Gore, and completed a Leadership in Urban Transformation programme at the University of Pretoria.
Environmental Solutions
GCS helps businesses, municipalities, and industries move towards a cleaner, low-carbon future. Our work focuses on:
- Measuring impact through carbon footprint assessments to highlight where emissions come from.
- Preparing for carbon tax so organisations stay compliant with South Africa’s regulations.
- Improving energy use by applying ISO 50001 systems and practical efficiency measures.
- Saving costs and reducing waste in factories, offices, and public facilities.
- Greening technology by making IT systems more sustainable and data-driven.
- Designing low-carbon strategies that balance global climate goals with South Africa’s realities.
These solutions don’t just meet regulations — they help clients cut costs, lower risks, and build more resilient operations.
Social Impact
For GCS, empowerment is more than a principle , it is a way of working. The company actively trains and mentors young professionals, particularly women, preparing them to thrive in the green economy. Many of these trainees have gone on to lead community-based sustainability projects, conduct audits, and establish their own ventures.
Internally, Prakshna fosters a culture of inclusivity and support, ensuring that every team member feels valued and empowered. This commitment to social equity underscores GCS’s belief that sustainability is not just technical, but human.
Governance and ESG
Governance is the third pillar of GCS’s success. Under Velter’s leadership, the company operates with transparency, robust project management, and accountability. By aligning with ISO energy management standards and ethical delivery, GCS ensures trust and integrity across all projects.
Together, these commitments demonstrate GCS’s embodiment of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. While many organisations treat ESG as a compliance requirement, GCS integrates it into every aspect of its operations — making it a way of doing business.
Looking Forward
With over a decade of impact and recognition, including being named a finalist in the 2025 Nedbank Oliver Top Empowerment Awards under Top Sustainable Business of the Year, GCS continues to grow with purpose.
As Prakshna emphasizes, “Sustainability is not just technical, it is human. It is about equity, trust, and building a future where businesses, communities, and the environment thrive together.”
Gordon Carbon Solutions is more than a consultancy — it is a partner in building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable South Africa.
