De Aar, South Africa – 26 March 2025 – Enpower Trading is proud to announce a landmark 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines Ltd, to deliver 48.30 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per annum of renewable energy. The clean energy will be provided, via a wheeling agreement, from SolarAfrica Energy’s SunCentral solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in De Aar directly to Ivanplats’ Platreef mine, located in Limpopo Province, South Africa.
The Platreef platinum-palladium-rhodium-nickel-gold-copper mine is currently under construction and is expected to commence production in the fourth quarter of 2025. Through a series of phased expansions planned over the next decade, the Platreef mine is poised to become one of the world’s largest and lowest-cost producers of platinum-group-metals.
“Renewable energy is no longer a choice; it’s a necessity,” said James Beatty, CEO of Enpower Trading. “This agreement with Ivanplats exemplifies how mining and energy sectors can collaborate to support the green economy while ensuring economic growth. By delivering clean energy to Platreef, we’re not just powering a mine; we’re empowering a sustainable future.”
Jacques Pretorius, Managing Director of Ivanplats added: “The PPA with Enpower Trading underscores Ivanhoe Mines’ commitment to the sustainable development of its projects that will supply the world with the critical minerals needed for a greener future.”
Minerals Fuelling the Green Economy
The Platreef mine’s production of critical minerals is essential to the green economy. Once fully ramped up, Platreef’s Phase 3 expansion is expected to annually produce over 1 million ounces of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold, plus 35,000 tonnes of nickel and copper.
Platinum, palladium and rhodium are integral to hydrogen fuel cells and catalytic converters, while nickel and copper play crucial roles in batteries and power infrastructure. The mine’s resources contribute directly to reducing global carbon emissions by supporting renewable energy technologies and electrification.
Solar PV Energy from SunCentral
The SunCentral solar PV plant in De Aar, will be the source of electricity for the agreement. Operated by SolarAfrica Energy, Phase 1 of the 1GW larger renewable energy facility project, is a state-of-the-art 342 megawatt-peak (MWp) plant, providing reliable, clean energy to South Africa’s grid. By leveraging SolarAfrica Energy’sinfrastructure, the agreement highlights the benefits of wheeling power to remote operations, enabling companies like Ivanplats to adopt sustainable practices while maintaining operational efficiency.
About Ivanhoe Mines
Ivanhoe Mines is a Canadian mining company focused on advancing its three principal projects in Southern Africa; the expansion of the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the DRC, the ramp-up of the ultra-high-grade Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the DRC; and, the phased development of the tier-one Platreef platinum- palladium-nickel-rhodium-gold-copper project in South Africa.
Ivanplats
Ivanplats (Pty) Ltd, a 64%-owned subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, is building the Platreef platinum group metal mine, which is one of the world’s largest undeveloped precious metals projects. The Platreef mine is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, a region responsible for over 70% of the world’s platinum production.
Phase 1 operations of the Platreef mine are expected to commence in Q4 2025, marking the start of a multi-generational mining complex underpinned by vast, high-grade resources and immense, untapped exploration upside. The planned phased expansion of the Platreef mine is expected to take place over the next decade, making it one of the largest and lowest-cost primary platinum group metals producers globally. In addition, the Platreef mine will produce notable amounts nickel and copper as by-products.
Platreef mine will use modern, mechanized, and highly productive bulk mining methods, achieving both superior economies of scale and significantly improved standards of safety compared with its industry peers.
