Johannesburg LPG summit targets Africa’s clean cooking gap

3 min read

Access to clean, affordable cooking energy remains one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most persistent development challenges. This April, Johannesburg will host a major regional summit aimed at closing that gap.

The Sub-Saharan Africa LPG Expo – Johannesburg 2026, taking place on 9–10 April at the Sandton Convention Centre, will draw more than 2 000 energy professionals, government representatives and clean cooking advocates to explore how liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can play a central role in the region’s energy transition.

The event is co-organised by the LPG Expo and the Liquified Petroleum Gas Association South Africa (LPGSA).

The opening day will mark a significant moment for the continent with the official launch of the Saudi Forward7 Initiative Africa Clean Cooking Competition, a cross-sector programme designed to identify and scale innovative clean cooking solutions across Africa. The competition brings together governments, the private sector and development partners to move beyond pilots into measurable impact.

This will be followed by the Clean Cooking Private Sector Engagement Workshop, where stakeholders will discuss funding, partnerships and support to advance clean cooking projects in sub-Saharan Africa.

Day 2 features a dedicated clean cooking conference stream addressing policy frameworks, financing mechanisms and scalable delivery models for expanding LPG access. A specialised Clean Cooking for Life Workshop, powered by the World Liquid Gas Association, will focus on safety standards and practical implementation across the value chain.

Gadibolae Dihlabi, managing director of LPGSA, says: “This joint platform provides an important opportunity for the LPG industry and the public sector to come together. LPGSA is proud to co-organise an event that will support meaningful progress on safety, affordability and clean cooking delivery in South Africa and beyond.”

Alongside the conference, the event will host the largest LPG-focused trade exhibition in sub-Saharan Africa, spanning 5 430 square metres and featuring more than 50 local and international exhibitors showcasing technologies, equipment and solutions across the LPG value chain.

The event is supported by platinum sponsors Easigas and Oryx Energies, silver sponsor Petregaz, and Clean Cooking strategic sponsor, the Oil Sustainability Program.

With clean cooking access high on the regional development agenda, the Johannesburg summit arrives at a moment of growing urgency – and opportunity.
